Joseph Apodaca, Taos County: Sergeant killed in motorcycle crash during urgent reckless driver search

Taos County is in shock after the death of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, a longtime law enforcement officer who was killed in a motorcycle crash while responding to an active search for a reckless driver late Friday night.

The incident happened around 10:25 p.m. along State Road 518, where deputies from the Taos County Sheriff’s Office were actively working to locate a driver reported to be operating dangerously in the area.

Sergeant Apodaca was riding a department-issued motorcycle as part of the response effort when a marked sheriff’s pickup truck attempted a left turn into a dirt driveway.

In that moment, Apodaca’s motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of the truck. The impact caused severe injuries, and he did not survive the crash.

He was later pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. by the Office of the Medical Investigator. News of his passing spread quickly the following morning, leaving colleagues and residents in deep grief.

Officials across New Mexico law enforcement expressed sorrow, describing Apodaca as a committed public servant who spent years working to protect the community he served.

Leaders in Taos County said his death represents a painful loss for both the sheriff’s office and the wider region, with many remembering his calm leadership and steady presence in the field.

Apodaca began his career in 2014 at the county’s Adult Detention Center before moving into the Sheriff’s Office in 2018, where he eventually rose to the rank of sergeant through years of dedicated service.

Authorities continue to review the circumstances of the crash as the community reflects on the sudden loss of an officer who was responding to duty when the tragedy unfolded.
