Summer McElwee was a young woman from Lake Charles with her eyes locked on one goal. She wanted to become a veterinarian and was studying Veterinary Science at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Saint Kitts and Nevis when her life was cut short.
She had worked steadily toward that dream for years. Before Ross University, she studied pre-veterinary sciences at the University of New Orleans. She also attended St. Louis Catholic High School and Iowa High School in Louisiana.
Her passing has left her family in deep shock. Her mother described her in a painful tribute as more than a daughter, calling her her “very best friend, my heart, and my world.” The family is now facing the hard task of bringing her home while dealing with overwhelming grief.
Those who knew Summer say she carried a rare kind of energy. She was often described as someone who could walk into a room and instantly lift it. Her smile and easy laughter stayed with people long after she left.
Animals were a central part of her life. Her dream of becoming a veterinarian was not just a career choice, but something tied to how she lived every day. Her dog Ryder and cat Kendal were among the companions she loved deeply.
Outside of her studies, she enjoyed simple joys. She liked dancing, going to the beach, and spending time with family and friends whenever she could step away from her academic workload.
Her loss has triggered an outpouring of grief across Louisiana and within the Ross University community. Friends and classmates have shared memories of her kindness, warmth, and the way she treated people with genuine care.
Summer McElwee’s life, though short, left a lasting impression on those around her. Her story continues to be shared as one of ambition, love, and a future that ended far too soon.
