McIntosh County Oklahoma: Terry Gene Riley, McAlester Man Lost After Lake Eufaula Drowning

Terry Gene Riley, a 34-year-old man from McAlester, died after a drowning incident at Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma on Thursday evening.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. near the area just north of the Eufaula Cove Marina Boat Ramp in McIntosh County. Riley had gone into the water to retrieve floating water toys when things quickly turned dangerous.

Witnesses reported that he began struggling in the water and called for help. Moments later, he went under and did not resurface.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after he was reported missing and immediately began search efforts across the area.

Despite continuous recovery operations through the night, authorities were unable to locate him until the following morning.

His body was recovered around 9:15 a.m. on Friday, bringing a painful end to an overnight search that drew concern from the local community.

Officials confirmed that Riley was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time, a factor they say often plays a critical role in preventing drowning incidents in open water.

News of his death has left family members and friends in deep shock as they try to process the sudden loss of someone they say was part of their daily lives.

The McAlester community has also been left grieving, with many reflecting on how quickly a normal recreational moment can turn tragic on the water.

Authorities continue to emphasize water safety, urging the public to wear life jackets even in familiar or seemingly calm conditions, as unexpected changes in water conditions can be dangerous.

Riley will be remembered by those close to him as a man whose life ended far too soon, leaving behind grief that now stretches across his community.
