Topeka, Kansas – It was a quiet Saturday when everything changed at the Interstate 70 and Southwest Wanamaker Road interchange. A single-vehicle crash brought emergency crews rushing in, but the scene would end in tragedy.
The driver was identified as 62-year-old Paul Welliver of Topeka. He was the only person inside the vehicle when the crash happened near the Wanamaker bridge area.

Emergency responders arrived quickly after the June 6 call. Officers and medical teams immediately began life-saving efforts at the scene, working with urgency in a bid to stabilize him.
Despite those efforts, Welliver sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a sudden and painful loss that unfolded in minutes along a busy stretch of roadway.
Authorities secured the area as traffic built up around the interchange. Drivers were slowed as emergency lights filled the highway and investigators began examining what happened.
The roadway remained partially disrupted as crews worked carefully to document the scene. Eventually, the area was cleared, and traffic resumed normal flow.
Investigators with the Topeka Police Department have not released details on what may have caused the crash. The circumstances remain under active review as officials continue to piece together the moments leading up to the incident.
For now, the focus remains on understanding what went wrong on that stretch of highway where a routine drive ended without warning.
