Friday evening started out like any normal weekend kickoff for Jordan and Sierra Walters. The 33-year-old couple from Milan, Indiana, packed up their two young kids into the family SUV for a drive. They were cruising along State Road 350 in Dearborn County around 6:00 p.m., completely unaware that their lives were about to change in a split second.
Out of nowhere, a westbound pickup truck suddenly veered completely out of its lane. The heavy Ford F-150 crossed the double yellow center line right into the path of the Walters family. The impact was incredibly violent, resulting in a direct head-on collision that completely crushed both vehicles.
The force of the crash sent the family’s GMC Terrain spinning off the south side of the highway. It went straight down a steep embankment, coming to a stop in the brush. Passing drivers immediately pulled over to help and called emergency crews to the horrific scene.
First responders rushed to the wreckage, but the news was absolutely heartbreaking. Jordan Walters and his wife, Sierra, had suffered massive injuries from the direct impact. The local coroner’s office pronounced both of them dead right there at the scene, ending two young lives in an instant.
Meanwhile, the couple’s two small children were still strapped into their car seats in the back. Both toddlers survived the initial impact but suffered various injuries. Paramedics carefully pulled them from the wrecked SUV and rushed them to local hospitals for urgent medical care.
Extended family members were later tracked down and notified about the unimaginable tragedy. The entire close-knit community of Milan is reeling from the sudden loss of the young parents. Neighbors are already coming together to figure out how to support the two newly orphaned children.
State troopers are still working hard to figure out exactly why the pickup truck crossed the line. Investigators are waiting on toxicology tests to see if drugs or alcohol played a role in the wreck. For now, a local community is left mourning a beautiful family torn apart way too soon.
