Thursday afternoons on the north side of town are usually pretty quiet. But things took a dark turn on Colonial Avenue yesterday when a call for medical help ended in a fatal shooting.
A 24-year-old man was inside a home on the 500 block, dealing with a severe medical crisis. Around 1 p.m., someone dialed 911 to report that he was suffering from a possible drug overdose.

An Evansville detective happened to be right around the corner when the emergency call went out. He rushed over to the house immediately, hoping to save the young man’s life before regular backup could even arrive.
The young man was down a hallway when the plainclothes officer walked into the home. Instead of accepting help, the distressed man pulled out a handgun and pointed it straight at the detective.
Chaos broke out instantly as the young man allegedly started firing shots inside the residence. The detective was forced to retreat toward the front yard to find cover from the incoming gunfire.
The suspect didn’t stop there and followed the officer outside into the open yard while still wielding his weapon. The detective pulled his own firearm and shot back until the immediate threat was completely stopped.
First responders tried to give the young man medical aid right away, but it was already too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a local family devastated and an entire neighborhood looking for answers.
