A sixteen-year-old boy from Philadelphia traveled down to Wilmington this week, but he never made it back home. It is the ultimate nightmare for any parent. Jeran Taylor was just a kid with his whole life ahead of him before everything changed in an instant.
The tragedy unfolded on Monday evening, June 23, around 8:33 p.m. The summer sun was setting, and neighbors were winding down for the night. Suddenly, the quiet peace of the 1600 block of West 5th Street was completely shattered by a volley of loud gunfire.

Terrified residents immediately called 911 to report the shots. When Wilmington police officers pulled up to the scene, they discovered a horrific sight. The young teenager was lying on the ground, suffering from a severe and life-threatening gunshot wound.
First responders rushed Jeran to a nearby hospital as fast as they could. Medical staff took over immediately, working frantically to stabilize him. He was listed in critical condition, fighting for every single breath while doctors tried to save him.
Despite the heroic, life-saving efforts of the hospital staff, the injuries were simply too severe. Jeran Taylor passed away a short time later. A young life filled with bright potential was cut incredibly short on a cold sidewalk far from his hometown.
Back in Philadelphia, a family and an entire community are now left completely heartbroken. A teenager who should have been enjoying his summer break has instead become another tragic face of gun violence. The pain of his loss is radiating across state lines.
Wilmington homicide detectives have now taken over the case and are working around the clock. They are trying to understand why a boy from Philly was targeted on the city’s west side. His family is now left waiting, praying, and begging for someone to speak up and bring them closure.
