Quantavious Lee, Rochester: A devastating head-on wrong-way crash cuts down two promising young lives in an instant.

It was just another quiet Friday morning before everything went wrong. Two young guys, both only 21 years old, had their whole lives ahead of them. Quantavious Lee and Charles Barnes were cruising down the highway, likely talking about their weekend plans or just listening to music. Then, in a split second, a nightmare on wheels completely ended their futures.

The tragedy struck around 1:25 a.m. right on the Inner Loop’s eastbound lanes. The young men were traveling in a 2012 Ford Fusion near the St. Paul Street overpass. They had absolutely no warning that a massive metal trap was barreling straight toward them in the dark.

Out of nowhere, a 39-year-old woman driving a 2024 Honda CR-V appeared in their lane. She was driving the wrong way, heading westbound in the eastbound lanes. The collision was inevitable and devastating. The Honda smashed into the Ford Fusion head-on with incredible force.

The impact was so severe that it instantly claimed the lives of both young men. New York State Police troopers arrived quickly but could do nothing to save them. Both Lee and Barnes were pronounced dead right there at the scene, leaving a permanent void in the hearts of their families.

But the destruction did not stop with the first crash. The force of the head-on smash pushed the Ford Fusion directly into the path of a third vehicle. A 2012 Jeep Liberty, driven by 29-year-old Marvin Harmon, could not avoid the wreckage and collided with the spinning car.

Paramedics rushed Harmon to Strong Memorial Hospital after checking him out at the scene. Fortunately, his injuries were non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, the Facebook and Instagram feeds of local friends and relatives filled with complete shock and overwhelming grief as news of the boys’ deaths broke.

Now, families are left holding onto memories and sorting through old photos of Quantavious and Charles. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office has ordered autopsies to assist with the investigation. State troopers from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are still trying to figure out how a normal night ended in such an awful loss.
