The small town of Theresa is feeling a deep loss this week after saying goodbye to a truly remarkable local figure. Joel Bernhard, the beloved owner of Confections By Joel, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 47. He spent his final moments surrounded by his family at St. Agnes Hospital over in Fond du Lac. His passing brings an end to an incredibly inspiring life that was completely defined by strong faith and pure determination.
Joel started facing massive challenges right from the time he was a little kid. He was born on November 8, 1978, to his parents Ron and Karen Bernhard. When he was only two years old, doctors found a brain tumor that required several intense surgeries. The procedures saved his life but ultimately took away his sight. Instead of letting blindness slow him down, Joel chose to live by a simple rule, always telling people that it is not about what you cannot do, but what you can do.

Growing up, Joel proved to everyone around him that he was not going to let his lack of sight hold him back. He went to Franklin Elementary School over in Oshkosh, where he picked up braille and learned how to navigate the world on his own terms. Later on, he graduated from Lomira High School and dove headfirst into all kinds of fun activities. He kept himself busy with the school band, forensics, 4-H, and FFA, showing everyone that he wanted to experience every single piece of life.
He spent plenty of time enjoying standard Wisconsin traditions and making great memories with the people he loved. He regularly showed off his animals and his award-winning baked goods at the Fond du Lac County Fair. He loved going out into the woods hunting with his brother Mike, building complex Lego sets, and lifting his voice to sing hymns on Sundays. Joel took on every single one of these hobbies with a massive amount of excitement and a genuinely thankful heart.
His deep Christian faith was the absolute anchor of his entire life from start to finish. Joel was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church right in Theresa. He did not just talk about his beliefs, but he actually lived them every day through his quiet actions. Anyone who crossed paths with him noticed his profound kindness, deep humility, and the genuine compassion he offered to every single stranger who walked into his world.
Joel eventually turned his love for sweet treats into a full-time career after earning a culinary arts degree from Moraine Park Technical College. Back in 2001, he opened up Confections For Any Occasion, which quickly became a famous landmark in the Theresa community. He became widely known for making incredible handcrafted chocolates and signature truffles. More than just a simple retail shop, he built a warm space where local families gathered, friendships grew, and everyone felt genuinely welcome.
Even when his body threw massive health struggles his way, including multiple surgeries and both liver and kidney transplants, Joel kept pushing forward. When a terrible fire destroyed his shop in 2024, the community and his workers completely rallied around him to rebuild the business. Even from his hospital bed during tough times, he kept guiding daily operations and talking with his staff. He is survived by his mom Karen, his brother Mike, and his nieces Samantha and Sabrina, while joining his late father Ronald and sister Angela in peace. A final funeral service is set for Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at St. Peter’s.
