GONZALES, Calif. – What began as a 911 call for help on Carr Road ended with 66-year-old Pablo Villasenor in jail and his wife, Carmen Vega Tapia, dead.
Authorities say the call came in at about 9:27 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2026. Villasenor told dispatchers his 60-year-old wife was bleeding and that he did not know the cause. Deputies with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 28000 block of Carr Road, just outside the Gonzales city limits.

When deputies arrived, they found Tapia suffering from a severe laceration. Emergency crews rendered aid at the scene and rushed her to a local trauma center. Despite efforts to save her life, she was pronounced deceased.
During the initial response, deputies detained Villasenor after noticing he had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, treated, and later released. Following further investigation, he was booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder.
A search warrant executed at the home led investigators to recover both a firearm and a knife. Officials believe the weapons may have played a role in the fatal incident, though they have not publicly detailed the sequence of events.
The death of Carmen Vega Tapia has deeply impacted the Gonzales community. Neighbors say the couple had lived in the area for years, and the violence has left many struggling to understand how things unfolded.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact investigators as they work to determine what led to the deadly events on Carr Road.
