Meridian was still quiet before sunrise when Matthew Cox’s car left the road and never came back. The 18-year-old from Kuna was driving alone in the early hours of Thursday when his sedan veered off South Meridian Road near East Columbia Road, rolled, and slammed into a power pole. He died at the scene.
Deputies with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office were called out around 3:23 a.m. on Feb. 12. By the time they arrived, the crash had already torn through the darkness, leaving the vehicle heavily damaged and the roadway scattered with debris. There were no other cars involved.

Investigators say Cox was heading north in a black 2001 Jaguar S-Type when he lost control. He was the only person inside the car. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene, ending a life that had barely begun.
Speed is believed to have played a role, according to detectives, though the investigation is still active. Crash reconstruction specialists are working to piece together the exact moments before the car left the roadway.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office confirmed Cox’s identity on Friday. His death remains pending a final determination on the cause and manner, a process that can take time as investigators review evidence and findings.
For those who knew him, the loss is sudden and heavy. A late-night drive turned into a tragedy before dawn, leaving family and friends to grapple with questions that may never fully settle.
The sheriff’s Collision Reconstruction Team is continuing its work and has asked anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Authorities say even small details could help clarify what happened in those final seconds on the quiet stretch of road.
