Tuscaloosa County — A serious head-on crash Tuesday night left a Northport woman and a 12-year-old injured and claimed the life of the other driver, 43-year-old Haley G. Lancaster of Brookwood. The wreck unfolded shortly after 8 p.m. along Alabama Highway 69 near mile marker 155, roughly seven miles north of Tuscaloosa.
State troopers say the collision involved a 2013 Hyundai Sonata driven by Lancaster and a 2023 Ford Expedition driven by 45-year-old Elizabeth Broemlage. Lancaster was not wearing a seat belt, and troopers pronounced her dead at the scene. The force of the impact sent Broemlage’s vehicle off the road.

Broemlage and her young passenger were both taken to DCH Regional Medical Center with injuries that officials have not fully detailed. Family members have described Broemlage as a devoted parent and active community member, now facing a long recovery both physically and emotionally.
Neighbors who live near the crash site say they heard the collision and rushed to help before first responders arrived. Some described the scene as chaotic, with bystanders comforting the injured while waiting for emergency crews. It was a night that no one expected to turn tragic.
At a temporary memorial near the scene, residents have left candles and messages wishing healing for Broemlage and the young passenger. Many have expressed gratitude that the injured survived, even as they continue to mourn Lancaster’s death.
Troopers noted that the investigation into what exactly caused the head-on impact remains open. They are reviewing evidence from the scene and interviewing witnesses as part of that effort.
The crash briefly closed a stretch of Alabama 69 as crews cleared wreckage and allowed investigators to work. Motorists who travel that route regularly say they were shocked to learn someone from their small community was involved in such a severe wreck.
As the community absorbs the impact of the crash, attention has turned to roadway safety and the everyday decisions drivers make behind the wheel. In Brookwood and Northport, people are talking about how fragile life can be and how quickly a routine drive can change everything.
