Law enforcement officials in Mifflin are working to untangle the circumstances behind the sudden death of 26-year-old Brandon Sheaffer, whose body was found inside a Maine Street residence Wednesday evening. The case has drawn coordinated efforts from local and state investigators.
At approximately 5:04 p.m. on Feb. 19, emergency crews were dispatched to 39 Maine Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive individual. Deputies from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office arrived with firefighters from Mifflin Township and officers from the Mifflin Village Police Department.

Inside the home, first responders located Sheaffer unconscious on the floor. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed how long he may have been unresponsive before the call was placed.
Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider confirmed that the death is under investigation. To ensure a thorough review, officials from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification are assisting local deputies. The Ashland County Coroner’s Office is also involved in determining the cause and manner of death.
As of Thursday, the coroner had not issued an official cause of death. That determination will likely depend on further examination and analysis. Investigators continue to gather statements from witnesses and examine evidence collected at the residence.
Officials emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public. Still, the presence of multiple agencies underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case. Each detail is being documented as detectives work to establish a clear sequence of events.
Law enforcement is asking anyone who may have relevant information to contact the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau. Until more answers emerge, the investigation remains active, and a small Ohio community is left waiting for clarity in the wake of a sudden loss.
