MARTIN COUNTY, Texas – Seven-Year-Old Killed, Driver Dies After U-Turn Crash on SH 349

In a quiet stretch of State Highway 349 in Martin County, a deadly collision Thursday evening ended with the loss of two lives, including a 7-year-old child, leaving a community stunned and families shattered. Just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 19, 23-year-old Mariano Molinar was behind the wheel of a 2022 Dodge Challenger heading north when he suddenly attempted a U-turn in the inside lane. The maneuver brought his car straight into the path of a southbound 2009 Ford F-150 driven by 50-year-old Carlos Tijerina of Lamesa.

Molinar was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement officials later noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a detail that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. In the Ford, Tijerina and his passengers were struck without warning. A 7-year-old boy riding in the back seat of the truck died at the scene. Two other occupants were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, one with serious injuries and another with less severe wounds.

Emergency responders worked swiftly, but the impact was too great for the young boy, described by neighbors in Lamesa as bright and full of energy. Friends of Tijerina say he is struggling to process the loss of the child, who was like family to those who knew him. The family’s grief is palpable, and the community has begun rallying around them with support in whatever ways they can.

State troopers continue to investigate the cause of the unsafe U-turn, reviewing witness statements and physical evidence from the crash site. They have not yet released details about road conditions, traffic factors, or whether speed or distraction may have played a role. At this point, officials say the investigation remains active, with more information expected as the inquiry continues.

Residents along SH 349 say the stretch of highway has seen its share of close calls over the years, with long distances between towns and few places to safely turn around. For many, the memory of this night will linger as they consider the risks that come with high-speed rural roads after dark, when an instant decision can change lives forever.

Friends and family remember the boy as a gentle soul who loved trucks and had an infectious smile. In the tiny circles of West Texas towns, everyone knows someone who knows someone – and the news spread fast on Friday, leaving many to struggle with the harsh reality that a simple drive home can end in tragedy.

This collision underscores how quickly a moment behind the wheel can shift from ordinary to devastating. Safety advocates hope it will renew calls for better signage, safer turnaround points, and reminders about seatbelt use on highways that connect tight-knit communities across Texas.
