MARTIN COUNTY, Texas – Crash on SH 349 Highlights Risky Turn That Took Lives of Driver and Child

A routine Thursday night drive turned catastrophic on State Highway 349 when a risky U-turn claimed the life of a young driver and a 7-year-old passenger, leaving others injured and a West Texas community reeling. At about 9 p.m. Feb. 19, authorities say 23-year-old Mariano Molinar of Lubbock was heading north in a Dodge Challenger when he made an abrupt U-turn directly into the path of a southbound Ford F-150 driven by 50-year-old Carlos Tijerina of Lamesa.

The force of the impact was immediate. Molinar was killed on the spot; he was not wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators. In the truck he struck, a child in the back seat also died at the scene. Two other occupants, including Tijerina, were rushed to Midland Memorial Hospital with injuries that range from minor to serious.

For Tijerina, the accident is a nightmare taking shape in real time. Friends of the family describe a man heartbroken over the loss of the child, who was more like kin than a casual passenger. The mood in Lamesa on Friday was one of shared sorrow. People spoke of the boy’s laughter and plans for his future, now forever unfulfilled.

Traffic safety officials say the collision happened at mile marker 316, a long, straight section of the highway where cars often travel fast and visibility is good. Making a U-turn in such a spot, without a proper turn-around or signal, turned deadly. Law enforcement continues to review the scene and collect evidence as part of an ongoing investigation.

Neighbors along the highway admit they’ve seen drivers attempt risky maneuvers before. In rural parts of Texas, where roads stretch for miles with few intersections, getting stuck behind a slow-moving vehicle or missing a turn can tempt drivers to take chances. This crash, deadly as it was, may bring renewed attention to those dangers.

The community’s response has been quiet but deeply felt — neighbors checking in on the injured, sharing meals with grieving relatives, and trying to make sense of how quickly life can change. For many, the images of flashing lights and the sound of sirens that night are still fresh.

While details about the crash remain under review, one fact stands clear: two lives were lost, and others forever altered in a matter of seconds. The tragedy serves as a reminder to drivers everywhere about the importance of caution, patience, and safety measures like wearing seatbelts, especially on roads where help may be miles away.

In the days ahead, memorials and vigils are expected as families and friends gather to honor the boy and remember his short life, even as they grapple with the sudden void left behind.
