In LaPlace, Louisiana, an ordinary Thursday afternoon turned into a tragedy when two local teens, 18-year-old Daniel Medina and 17-year-old Gerard Garrett, died after a drug deal inside a moving car turned violent and ended with their vehicle crashing into a home in the Cambridge Subdivision.
Around mid-afternoon, deputies with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office were called to Yorktowne Drive after someone reported a car had smashed into a house. When they arrived, they found the vehicle lodged against the front of the home. Inside, both young men were unresponsive and had been shot. Authorities later confirmed neither survived.

Neighbors described hearing the loud crash and coming outside to find what they first thought was just a bad traffic accident. It wasn’t until investigators began piecing together the scene that the truth emerged. Physical evidence and recovered cellphone records suggested that Medina and Garrett were engaged in a drug transaction that deteriorated into a confrontation. According to law enforcement, a struggle over the deal escalated to gunfire between the two inside the car as it was moving.
The Toyota Camry was found riddled with bullet holes and two handguns were recovered at the scene. Deputies also found narcotics and cash inside the car, all signs pointing to an illegal drug transaction that went horribly wrong. Law enforcement emphasized that this was not a random act of violence but a tragic result of dangerous choices that ended in the deaths of two local teenagers.
The resident of the house hit by the car said she was lucky to be unharmed. She had been inside when the crash occurred but was not near the front door at the moment of impact. She spoke about how rattled the community feels knowing something like this can happen right in their neighborhood.
Investigators are continuing to look into all aspects of the incident, though the sheriff’s office made it clear that the primary focus remains on understanding exactly how a routine drug deal escalated into a deadly shootout. Officials have reiterated the risks that come with this kind of lifestyle, especially for young people.
Families and friends of Medina and Garrett are left grieving and searching for answers after a day that started like any other but ended in the loss of two promising lives.
