In the quiet Tara Estates neighborhood of Summersville, West Virginia, Thursday evening ended in tragedy when police found three people dead inside a home. Around 5 p.m., Nicholas County 911 received a call reporting individuals inside a house on Ashley Lane who were unresponsive and appeared gravely injured. When officers arrived, the scene they discovered was grim and silent.
Inside the residence, police found 50-something-year-old Dawn Morrow and her mother, 70-plus-year-old Nancy Lindwedel, both deceased with severe injuries. Nearby lay Dawn’s husband, Douglas Morrow, also dead. It was clear something violent had unfolded, but the full weight of it didn’t come into focus until investigators began piecing together what led to the moment.
Before the day had fully faded, authorities labeled the event a double murder-suicide. Evidence and early investigation suggest Douglas Morrow shot his wife and his mother-in-law in a sudden, devastating act of violence. After those attacks, he turned the weapon on himself. There was no sign of danger beyond the home and no other persons of interest, police said.
Those who lived there were discovered by another family member who also shared the home. That person called for help, but by the time officers with the Summersville Police Department, the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Office, and the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team arrived, nothing could be done. The scene was calm but filled with unanswered questions.
Chief Brad Reed of the Summersville Police Department described the incident as isolated, emphasizing there was no ongoing threat to neighbors or the community at large. The house on Ashley Lane, normally just another quiet address in Tara Estates, became the focal point of a somber investigation.
All three bodies were taken to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies. Officials have notified next of kin and continue to look into what motivated the violence, though no further details have been released. Investigators are asking for patience as they sort through the facts.
Friends, neighbors, and relatives are left grappling with the shock and sorrow of losing not just two community members but also confronting how quickly life can turn from ordinary to unbearable.
