PASADENA: Officer Shot, Suspect Dead After Foot Chase Near Metro Station

Late Monday evening in Pasadena, a routine 911 call about a shooting near the Sierra Madre Villa Metro station turned into a violent confrontation that left a police officer wounded and a suspect dead. What began as a report of someone shot in the shoulder quickly escalated into a chase and exchange of gunfire that has the community unsettled.

Police say they responded around 7:30 p.m. after someone called to report gunfire near the A Line station. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound and began providing medical aid. Before they could fully secure the scene, other officers spotted a man believed to be the shooter nearby. He ran from officers into the surrounding neighborhood.

The suspect led officers on a foot pursuit that ended several blocks away at the intersection of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Electronic Drive. That’s where the situation turned deadly. Officers and the suspect exchanged shots. The man was struck and died at the scene. One Pasadena police officer was also hit during the confrontation and rushed to a hospital for surgery.

The wounded officer, identified by authorities as Bryan Vasquez, a five-year veteran of the Pasadena Police Department, remains in stable but guarded condition after surgery. His colleagues and city officials have expressed support for him and his family as he begins his recovery.

Family members at the scene identified the suspect as 32-year-old Malcom Buchanan. Relatives said Buchanan had been struggling with mental health issues and may have stopped taking his medication in recent weeks. Those close to him described him as someone they cared about deeply, bewildered by the turn his life took that night.

Neighbors in the quiet area near the Metro station expressed shock. Many said they never expected such violence in a place they considered safe and familiar. Some described hearing multiple shots and seeing police activity stretch into the night as investigators worked the scene.

Police continue to investigate exactly what set off the initial shooting and the subsequent chase. Officials have not released a motive or explained how each part of the confrontation unfolded. Residents are left with lingering questions about safety, mental health, and how similar tragedies might be prevented in the future.
