Sacramento’s Downtown Commons felt shock and grief after a young man from Stockton was killed and a woman wounded in a stabbing late Monday night. Police and witnesses say the attack happened just before 9:45 p.m. along K Street near the Yard House restaurant in the heart of the busy entertainment district known as DOCO.
The victim was later identified by family as 21-year-old Dustin DeWitt, a man with big plans and a bright future ahead. Officers who rushed to the scene found DeWitt and a woman suffering from stab wounds and immediately took them to a hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, DeWitt died from his injuries. The woman remains hospitalized with serious injuries, though officials have not released details about her condition.

People who knew DeWitt described him as the kind of person who lit up a room. Family members said he had been in Sacramento to meet a friend from out of town that night. What began as a simple night out turned into a tragedy that has shaken both his loved ones and those who frequent the downtown area.
Investigators with the Sacramento Police Department’s homicide unit spent hours canvassing the crowded plaza, talking to witnesses and reviewing video, but so far they have not released any information about a suspect or what may have led to the attack. Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward to help them unravel what happened.
DeWitt’s family has been left trying to make sense of sudden loss. Relatives set up a fundraiser to help with funeral costs and other expenses, drawing support from people who wanted to honor his memory. Friends and colleagues said he balanced his time between jobs, worked hard, and had plans to pursue a career in aviation service.
For many who live or work near DOCO, the stabbing was a stark reminder that even familiar places can be the scene of violence. Local residents and business owners spoke of a need for greater safety measures, saying they hoped the investigation would also spark conversations about keeping public spaces secure for everyone.
The police investigation remains active and ongoing. Officers continue to ask for tips and video from the night of the attack as they work to identify whoever was responsible for taking DeWitt’s life.
