AUSTIN SHOOTING: MMA FIGHTER Jorge Pederson Dies After Weekend Chaos

Austin, Texas — The heart of this city’s vibrant nightlife was shaken early Sunday when gunfire erupted on West Sixth Street, leaving three people dead and more than a dozen wounded. Among those killed is 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, a mixed martial arts fighter known for his energy, humor and passion, who was taken off life support after being critically injured in the attack.

The violence unfolded just before 2 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, a popular spot where crowds had gathered. Witnesses described sudden terror as shots rang out. First responders arrived minutes later and found chaos and people running for cover. Police say 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne opened fire into the crowd from a vehicle before stepping out and continuing to shoot. Officers shot and killed him on the scene. Investigators are still working to understand what drove the attack, with federal authorities saying it’s too early to pin down a motive, although some early evidence is being examined carefully.

Alongside Jorge, two others were killed. Savitha Shan, 21, was a student at the University of Texas at Austin pursuing dual degrees, remembered for her bright future and loyal friendships. Ryder Harrington, 19, was a Texas Tech University student and fraternity member described by friends as kind and joyful. Fourteen other people were injured in the shooting, and several remain in hospitals in serious condition.

Friends and teammates of Jorge recall a man who carried warmth beyond the gym. He had been planning his professional MMA debut in May, a goal he spoke about with excitement. Those who knew him said his warmth and presence drew people in, and the news of his passing has rippled through his community with disbelief and sorrow.

City officials, law enforcement leaders and university representatives have offered condolences to the families and communities affected. Police Chief Lisa Davis spoke of an investigation that involves thousands of hours of video and scores of witness interviews, urging patience as facts are pieced together. Federal investigators, including the FBI, are assisting with the case.

In the aftermath, neighbors laid flowers and messages near the bar, while classmates and friends held vigils for the young lives lost. The shooting has stirred deep conversations about safety, violence and the fragile nature of public spaces, especially where young people gather.

Jorge Pederson’s family and friends are planning to celebrate his life in the days ahead, focusing on the determination and spirit he brought to every part of his life.
