Archbold, Ohio – The Archbold community is shaken after 78-year-old Linda Rufenacht died Monday afternoon in a head-on collision on U.S. Route 20 near County Road 7 in Amboy Township. Rufenacht was driving a 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan westbound just before 4 p.m. when her vehicle drifted left of the center line and struck a 2007 Peterbilt big rig coming eastbound, according to local crash reports.
Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say Rufenacht was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver, 34-year-old Charles Rose of Wolcottville, Indiana, was not injured. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, and impairment does not appear to have played a role, authorities reported.

For hours after the impact, investigators and first responders including the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation crews, and local fire units worked to clear the highway. Route 20 was closed for roughly four hours while the scene was processed and evidence was gathered.
Friends and relatives describe Rufenacht as a warm presence in Archbold and the surrounding communities. Neighbors say she was often seen helping others and that her sudden death has left a deep void among those who knew her. Many have shared memories of her kindness and quiet generosity in the days since the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminded drivers of the importance of vigilance on rural highways like U.S. 20. Troopers urged motorists to focus on the road, obey posted speed limits, wear safety belts, and avoid distractions that can lead to tragic outcomes.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision continues, with officials reviewing road conditions, vehicle and driver data to determine why Rufenacht’s van crossed into oncoming traffic. Her family is planning a memorial service to honor her life.
