LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss — A routine drive turned into a tragic crash Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 45, leaving two elderly Quitman residents dead and a Shubuta man in the hospital.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. on February 13, 2026, Nicholas Douglas, 34, was traveling north on Highway 45 in a 2016 Hyundai Elantra when a 2008 Chevrolet driven by 89‑year‑old Donald Sampson attempted to cross from Mitchum Bottom Road.

The impact was severe. Sampson and his passenger, 82‑year‑old Ollie Mae Donald, both of Quitman, died at the scene, victims of the violent collision that shook rural Lauderdale County.
Douglas was trapped briefly in his vehicle before fire crews from Lauderdale County Fire Service and paramedics with Metro Ambulance freed him and rushed him to a Meridian hospital. Authorities report he survived but remains under treatment for serious injuries.
Troopers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol and a specialized crash team worked through the afternoon documenting the scene and speaking with witnesses. Early signs point to judgment error as Sampson tried to cross the busy highway.
Friends and relatives of Douglas expressed shock and sadness over the loss of life in a crash he did not intend. Those who know him describe Douglas as cautious and polite, someone who rarely found himself in trouble.
While the investigation continues, questions linger about the visibility and timing at the crossroads where the crash occurred. Local drivers have expressed concern for years about the danger of that section of road without signals or safe crossing aids.
Officials have urged drivers to slow down and stay alert, especially on rural highways where high speeds leave little room for error. The community has been left grappling with grief, not only for the two elders who died but also for a young man now bearing the emotional and physical scars of a fatal accident.
As news spread through Shubuta and Quitman, neighbors gathered to support the families of Sampson and Donald and to check in on Douglas, hoping for his recovery and understanding of how a simple drive became a moment no one will forget.
