LAUDERDALE COUNTY Crash Kills Two Elders in Quiet Mississippi Community

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss — A slow rural road turned fatal Friday afternoon when a car trying to cross U.S. Highway 45 was struck by a passing vehicle, killing two longtime Quitman residents.

Around 2:30 p.m. on February 13, 2026, 89‑year‑old Donald Sampson was driving west on Mitchum Bottom Road with 82‑year‑old Ollie Mae Donald beside him. Neighbors say Sampson and Donald were well‑known in Clarke County for their warmth and years of community service.

As Sampson pulled out to cross the busy four‑lane highway near the Clarke County line, a northbound 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by 34‑year‑old Nicholas Douglas of Shubuta hit the passenger car with immense force.

First responders with Lauderdale County Fire Service and Metro Ambulance rushed to the scene, but Sampson and Donald were pronounced dead before they reached the hospital. Their families were notified in the late afternoon as investigators began piecing together the last moments of the crash.

Douglas was taken to a hospital in Meridian with injuries that are described as serious but not life‑threatening. State troopers on the scene said he was conscious and cooperative as emergency crews worked.

For those who knew Sampson and Donald, the news spread quickly through churches and neighbors. “They were always smiling and ready to help,” one relative said. Another added that the two had been out running errands, something they did together most days.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol and a crash investigation team are still reviewing what happened. Early reports indicate no signs of impairment, and authorities say mechanical failure does not appear to be a factor.

Residents along Mitchum Bottom Road say they’ve long feared the danger of crossing the highway, especially in peak travel hours. “It’s a hard place to judge the speed,” one local said. Community leaders are calling for renewed attention to road safety in the rural stretch.

As police gather facts and families mourn, friends and neighbors continue to share memories of Sampson and Donald’s kindness. The community has rallied around those left behind, offering support and prayers after a loss that feels as sudden as it is profound.
