The fight for life lasted just two days. In Birmingham, a young man who had been pulled from a burning home could not recover from the damage left behind by thick smoke and intense heat.
Dameon Abercrombie, 24, was rescued from a house fire earlier in the week, but the injuries he suffered proved too severe. Officials with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed he died Saturday afternoon, marking a tragic end to a desperate rescue effort that began just days before.

It all started Thursday afternoon, around 2:58 p.m., when Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service crews rushed to a home in the 6500 block of 2nd Avenue South. Smoke filled the air as firefighters moved quickly inside the residence, searching for anyone trapped.
That is when they found Abercrombie.
Firefighters pulled him from the home and immediately got him medical attention. He was rushed to UAB Hospital, where doctors worked to treat severe smoke inhalation. For a moment, there was hope that he might pull through.
But smoke inhalation can be unforgiving. Over the next two days, Abercrombie’s condition worsened. Despite continued efforts by medical staff, he was pronounced dead at 4:42 p.m. on Saturday.
Investigators are still working to understand what led to the fire. Officials have not yet determined the cause or where exactly it started inside the home. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service is leading that part of the investigation, while Birmingham police are also looking into the broader circumstances.
For now, many questions remain unanswered. What sparked the blaze, and whether anyone else was inside at the time, has not been made public. Authorities say more details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
What remains clear is the loss of a young life. A man rescued from danger, only to be overtaken by the injuries he could not escape.
