SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Arkansas — A Fort Smith woman’s life ended in a terrifying UTV crash early Wednesday, leaving the driver injured and a community stunned. Crystal Bieler, 41, was riding as a passenger when the vehicle went off State Highway 96 near Dalmut Road about 2 a.m.
Police say the driver lost control while rounding a right‑hand curve. The UTV veered into a ditch and rolled over, ejecting both occupants. Bieler died at the scene. The driver was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

There were no signs of bad weather or slick pavement. Skies were clear and the road was dry, leaving investigators puzzled about what caused the driver to misjudge the turn. The Arkansas State Police are now sifting through evidence and interviewing witnesses.
For the driver, the crash was a terrifying moment that will leave lasting memories. Neighbors say the pair had been out together earlier in the evening and were heading home when the crash happened. The driver’s family has not released a statement but is said to be coping with shock and concern.
Bieler was described by friends as a beloved member of her circle. Her upbeat nature and friendliness made a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Those memories now carry extra weight as loved ones process her sudden death.
The intersection of State Highway 96 and Dalmut Road has been the site of other crashes in the past, prompting some residents to call for road safety improvements. Tuesday’s wreck has renewed those concerns, with locals urging caution on rural roads after dark.
Police have not ruled out any contributing factors, including speed, distraction or mechanical failure. The investigation is ongoing as troopers gather facts and piece together what led to the deadly rollover.
As word of the crash spread, friends and family gathered to support one another, sharing stories of Bieler’s warmth and generosity. Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief throughout the Fort Smith area.
