Malik Somerville, Chaptico: Trapped inside a mangled green Chevy pickup, a 27-year-old’s life ends way too soon

The Chaptico community woke up to some really tough news this morning. A local guy, just 27 years old, didn’t make it home after a brutal car wreck. Folks around town are just heartbroken over the news.

Malik Javonn Somerville was the young man who lost his life today. He was driving his truck early on June 30 when things took a tragic turn. Friends and family are completely devastated by the sudden loss.

It all happened right around 7:40 in the morning. Emergency crews rushed out to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road after 911 calls came pouring in. First responders knew right away it was a bad situation.

Malik was driving a green 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. For reasons nobody fully understands just yet, the truck drifted completely off the eastbound side of the road. It didn’t just slide off smoothly, either.

The heavy pickup slammed hard into a utility pole first. The impact wasn’t enough to stop the truck, and it kept tearing right into a thick stand of trees. That is where the awful ride finally ended.

First responders found Malik trapped inside the crushed cab of the Silverado. They worked frantically to get to him and do whatever they could. Sadly, their efforts just weren’t enough, and he passed away right there at the scene.

Now, the folks who loved Malik are left trying to make sense of this nightmare. Local police are looking into exactly what went wrong on that road. For now, a whole community is just mourning a life that got cut way too short.
