It is the kind of devastating news that stops a tight-knit Midwestern town completely in its tracks. In the early morning hours of Friday, June 26, a quiet country road became the scene of an absolute tragedy. A single-vehicle ATV crash ended up taking the young life of 17-year-old Bailey Ousley, leaving the whole Wellston community totally heartbroken.
Local authorities reported that the wreck went down at around 1:27 a.m. Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Jackson Post rushed out to Hiram West Road after receiving the emergency call. The crash site sat just north of State Route 32 up in Milton Township, where a routine night ride took a sudden and terrible turn.

Bailey was behind the handlebars of a 2014 Honda Rancher ATV, navigating the dark rural roads. Riding right along with him was 18-year-old Gabrielle Myers, who also calls Wellston home. For reasons that investigators are still trying to figure out, the off-road vehicle veered off the right side of the pavement and struck a tree dead-on.
Emergency crews from Jackson County EMS arrived on the scene quickly and rushed Bailey over to Holzer Medical Center. The medical staff did everything they possibly could to save him, but his injuries were just too severe. The popular teenager sadly passed away at the hospital, cutting short a bright future that was only just getting started.
Meanwhile, Gabrielle Myers somehow managed to survive the violent impact with the tree. First responders checked her out right there at the scene and treated her for minor physical injuries. While her scratches and bruises will heal up quickly, the emotional weight of surviving such a terrible night is bound to stay with her for a long time.
The loss has hit the local school district and the town of Wellston incredibly hard. Bailey was a well-known face around the community, loved by his classmates, teammates, and neighbors who are all struggling to make sense of the tragedy. A heavy cloud of grief hangs over the area as folks gather to share memories of a kid who brought so much joy to those around him.
Right now, state troopers are keeping the investigation open to piece together exactly what caused the ATV to run off the road. Multiple local groups, including the Wellston Police and Fire Departments, pitched in to help out during the worst of it. For now, neighbors are doing what they do best—holding Bailey’s family close and remembering how fragile life really is.
