Muscatine, Iowa was shaken on June 1, 2026, after a violent chain of shootings left six people dead across several locations in the city.
Authorities identified 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland as the gunman in what investigators describe as a domestic-related murder-suicide.
Police say the first scene unfolded at a home on Park Avenue, where officers discovered four people already dead from gunshot wounds.
As the investigation expanded, two more victims were found at separate locations on Mill Street and Grandview Avenue. Both had also been fatally shot.
Officials later confirmed that McFarland was responsible for all the shootings and that the victims were believed to be members of his own family.
Among those killed was his wife, Lesa McFarland, adding another layer of devastation to an already devastating case.
The violence came to an end near the Riverfront Trail close to the pedestrian bridge, where McFarland was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later pronounced dead despite emergency response efforts.
The tragedy also reached into the Muscatine Community School District, which confirmed that two employees and two students were among the dead, leaving the community in shock.
Police continue to investigate the full circumstances behind what led to the killings, while urging anyone with information to come forward.
