Fernley, Nevada, turned tense on June 1, 2026, after a shooting that would later be ruled a homicide. Richard Allen Hightower, a 45-year-old local resident, was identified as the victim in a case that quickly pulled multiple law enforcement teams into action.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says the first emergency calls came in reporting gunfire in the area. Deputies rushed to the scene and found Hightower suffering from critical injuries.

Despite rapid response efforts, Hightower was pronounced dead at the scene. The news spread quickly through the community, leaving residents shaken in the usually quiet desert town.
Investigators moved fast. Within hours, authorities identified Jeremy Barrett, 40, as the suspected shooter. James Edward Karol, 44, was also identified as an involved suspect in the incident.
Both men were taken into custody shortly after the shooting. Officials confirmed they were booked on charges of Open Murder and are being held without bail at the Lyon County Jail.
Law enforcement said the operation involved multiple units working together, including patrol deputies, investigators, K9 teams, SWAT, and major crimes personnel. Emergency services and partner agencies also assisted on the ground.
Authorities credited the speed of the arrests to coordinated teamwork and rapid evidence gathering. Detectives are still reviewing what led up to the shooting, and the case remains active as more details are expected.
