Valdosta, Georgia — A workplace shooting at Jay Boy’s Travel Center off Interstate 75 left 21-year-old Damani Bentley dead and three others injured, in what officials describe as a sudden burst of violence among employees.
Authorities say the incident happened Sunday morning and quickly turned chaotic inside the business. Law enforcement confirmed that all individuals involved worked at the travel center and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Bentley, who was only 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other employees were also shot but survived. Officials say their injuries are not life-threatening and they are expected to recover.
His family described him as a respectful young man with a strong spirit and a bright future. In a statement, they said he was a loving son and brother who treated people with kindness and left a lasting impact on those around him.
They also shared that Bentley had plans to start college in just a few months. That future, they said, was cut short in a way that feels impossible to accept.
Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said investigators believe a dispute may have started the day before the shooting. He said that disagreement could have played a role in what happened, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Sheriff Paulk also noted that the suspect, identified as Jabari Nelms, allegedly ran out of ammunition during the shooting. He called that moment a “blessing,” saying it likely prevented even more harm.
A deputy arrived within about one minute of the first emergency call, officials said, a rapid response that may have stopped the situation from getting worse.
Nelms has been arrested and charged with murder along with additional offenses. Authorities say he is not cooperating with investigators as they continue to piece together what led to the deadly outbreak of gunfire.
The community is now left grappling with the loss of a young man many believed had his whole life ahead of him, as questions remain about how a workplace disagreement escalated into tragedy.
