A 17-year-old student, Martha Odom, was killed after gunfire broke out at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on Thursday afternoon. She was a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, a fact that has left her school community in deep shock.
The shooting happened inside the mall’s food court after what police described as an argument between two groups. The situation escalated quickly and turned violent in front of shoppers and workers who were caught in the middle.

According to Baton Rouge police, Martha Odom was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. Five other people were also injured in the chaos that followed, as people ran for safety and officers rushed into the building.
Authorities have said early in the investigation that the incident does not appear to have been random. This detail has shaped much of the ongoing work as detectives try to understand how the confrontation started and who was responsible for each action.
Officials confirmed that five individuals were taken into custody following the shooting. Investigators are still reviewing witness accounts and surveillance footage from inside the mall to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Ascension Episcopal School confirmed that three of its senior students were among those affected by the shooting. The school community has described the situation as heartbreaking, with families and classmates struggling to process the loss.
Local officials also responded to the tragedy. Lafayette Parish President Monique Blanco Boulet called for prayers for all families impacted and said the community was standing together during a painful moment.
Governor Jeff Landry praised the rapid response from law enforcement and stated that state support would continue as the investigation develops and families receive assistance in the aftermath.
