Porterville, California: Tulare Detective Killed During Eviction Shooting Leaves Pregnant Wife and Child Behind

Porterville, California: A Tulare County Sheriff’s Office detective was killed Thursday morning after a violent shooting broke out during an eviction-related response in Porterville.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10:20 a.m. at a residence in the 1700 block of West Brian Avenue, also identified as 1713 W Brian Avenue. Deputies had been responding to reports of shots fired when the situation escalated inside the home.

According to Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, the detective was struck when a suspect inside the residence opened fire through a door. The attack happened with little warning, turning a routine enforcement call into a deadly confrontation.

The wounded detective was rushed to Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:57 a.m.

Authorities said the detective was a father. His wife is currently four months pregnant. Officials have not yet released his name, pending notification of extended family and ongoing formal procedures.

Sheriff Boudreaux described the killing in stark terms, saying the act did not reflect normal or reasonable behavior. He emphasized the shock felt within the department and the wider law enforcement community.

The suspect has been identified as 59-year-old David Morales. After the shooting, communication between deputies and the residence continued, and a tense standoff developed as law enforcement secured the area.

Residents in nearby parts of Porterville were urged to shelter in place or leave the area if safe to do so. The neighborhood was placed under tight control while authorities worked to stabilize the scene.

Investigators remain active at the location as they continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting. Additional details are expected as the case develops.
