A quiet early morning on Montreal Lake First Nation turned tragic after police were called to a residence where a young man was found seriously injured. What began as an emergency response has now become a major investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what happened.
According to Saskatchewan RCMP, officers from the Montreal Lake and Waskesiu detachments were dispatched to a home in the community at approximately 1:10 a.m. on June 1 following reports of an injured male inside the residence. When officers arrived, they found the man and immediately began providing life-saving first aid.

Emergency Medical Services soon arrived and continued medical treatment at the scene. Despite those efforts, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the residence.
The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Steven Beatty of Timber Bay. His family has been notified of his death, and victim support services have been offered as they face an unimaginable loss.
Investigators quickly determined that the circumstances surrounding Beatty’s death were suspicious. Because of those findings, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit assumed control of the case and is now leading the investigation.
At this stage, police have released very little information about what may have occurred inside the home before officers arrived. Authorities have also not identified any suspects or persons of interest as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
Investigators are working to piece together a clear timeline of events from the hours leading up to Beatty’s death. Officers remain focused on collecting information that could help explain what happened during the early morning incident.
As the investigation continues, members of the community are left mourning the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon. Family members and loved ones are now waiting for answers while police continue their search for the truth.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. For now, the case remains active, and investigators say more details will be released as new information becomes available.
