OKLAHOMA CITY: Trooper Vernon Brake, Mother Mercedes Bayne, Child Killed in I-35 Crash

A quiet stretch of Interstate 35 in Oklahoma City turned into a scene of heartbreak late Wednesday morning. Just before 11:30 a.m., traffic between Britton Road and Hefner Road came to a sudden halt after a chain of events that no one saw coming. By the time it was over, three lives were gone, including a longtime state trooper, a young mother, and her 4-year-old daughter.

Investigators say the trouble began with something small but dangerous. Debris, possibly equipment that fell from a commercial vehicle, ended up scattered across the roadway. Drivers moving through the area were forced to slow down, react quickly, and try to avoid what had suddenly become a hazard in the middle of a busy highway.

Mercedes Bayne, 36, was driving southbound at the time. Authorities believe she either tried to dodge the debris or responded to the vehicles slowing ahead of her. In that split second, her car lost its path. It crossed over the center cable barrier and entered the northbound lanes, directly into oncoming traffic.

That is when her vehicle collided head-on with a patrol unit driven by Trooper Vernon Brake. The impact was severe and immediate. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but there was nothing they could do. Brake, Bayne, and her young daughter Ariana were all pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Brake had spent nearly two decades serving the state. Since graduating from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 56th Academy in 2006, he built a career focused largely on commercial motor vehicle enforcement. Colleagues describe him as steady, committed, and deeply respected. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Bayne’s story carries a different kind of weight. Family members remember her as a devoted mother who worked hard to create a better life. She graduated from Putnam City West High School and recently completed an esthetician program in Norman. It was a milestone she took pride in, a step toward a future she was building for her children.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities have confirmed that a commercial truck possibly linked to the debris has been identified. The case is now being handled by the Traffic Homicide Unit, and the crash site is being treated with the seriousness of a crime scene. Officials are working to piece together every detail that led to the moment everything changed.

Across the state, law enforcement agencies are mourning. Messages of support continue to come in for Trooper Brake’s family and fellow officers. At the same time, a community grieves a mother and her child, lost in an instant on a road they had likely traveled many times before.
