St. Louis County — Chauncia Meekins Killed in Late-Night Drive-Thru Shooting

The night shift was winding down when chaos broke through a quiet routine. Inside a Steak ’n Shake in North St. Louis County, a dispute at the drive-thru window turned deadly, leaving 32-year-old Chauncia La’Shell Meekins dead and a coworker wounded. What began as a typical late-night order ended in gunfire, cutting short a life and shaking a workplace that had just been carrying on as usual.

Police say officers were called to the restaurant near Bellefountaine Road and Interstate 270 around 11:35 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. When they arrived, they found two employees suffering from gunshot wounds inside the building. The scene was tense and urgent, with responders working quickly to assess the damage left behind.

Meekins, described by family as a dedicated worker who had been on the job for about three months, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her loss hit immediately and deeply. Just hours earlier, she had been in touch with relatives during a break, unaware that the night would take such a tragic turn.

The second victim, an adult male employee, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities say his injuries were not life-threatening, offering a small measure of relief in an otherwise devastating situation. Still, the trauma of what happened inside those walls is expected to linger.
Investigators believe the violence started with a confrontation involving employees and people inside a vehicle at the drive-thru. At some point during the dispute, someone in that vehicle allegedly pulled a weapon and fired through the window, striking both workers inside.

Witnesses have suggested the argument may have been tied to a food order, though officials have not confirmed that detail. What is clear is how quickly a routine interaction escalated into something irreversible.

The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police are continuing to piece together what led to the deadly exchange. Detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward, hoping even the smallest detail could help bring answers.

For Meekins’ family, the focus is now on grief and remembrance. A woman who had been going about her job, speaking with loved ones just hours before, is gone. In a place meant for quick meals and passing moments, her story now stands as a painful reminder of how fragile those moments can be.
