A routine Monday morning in Greeneville turned tragic when longtime businessman Gordon Williams lost his life following a fall from a moving truck on North Main Street.
Williams, 85, was riding in a truck near the area between the Greeneville/Greene County Library and First Baptist Church when the incident occurred. According to police, he apparently believed he had arrived at the church and was ready to get out of the vehicle.

Investigators said Williams unbuckled his seat belt and opened the truck door while the driver was in the middle of making a U-turn on North Main Street. As the maneuver was taking place, Williams fell from the truck and landed on the roadway.
The driver, identified as Anselmo Torres, told authorities that he and Williams had been heading to First Baptist Church earlier that morning. Torres said he realized he had forgotten something at home before reaching their destination.
According to police, Williams offered to accompany Torres back home so the forgotten item could be retrieved. The accident happened as Torres was turning the vehicle around to begin the return trip.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene. Williams was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from the injuries he suffered in the fall.
The loss has deeply affected many people across Greeneville. Williams was widely known throughout the community and spent decades building a reputation as a respected businessman and familiar local figure. Friends and residents remembered him as someone who had long been part of the town’s business and civic life.
Authorities said the investigation remained active as they continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. As of Tuesday, no charges had been announced in connection with the case.
Many in Greeneville are now mourning a man whose name had become closely tied to the community he served for so many years. What began as an ordinary trip to church ended in a heartbreaking loss that has left family, friends, and neighbors searching for answers.
