Jon Samuelson, Michigan City: Deputy Helping Stranded Driver Shot 3 Times Inside Hospital ER

What started as a routine act of kindness for a La Porte County sheriff’s deputy quickly turned into a nightmare inside a Northwest Indiana hospital emergency room Friday morning.

Authorities said Deputy Jon Samuelson, 33, was critically wounded after being shot several times by a man he had earlier helped along State Road 2 near Westville. Investigators said Samuelson had stopped to assist the driver of a disabled vehicle before taking him to Franciscan Health Michigan City at the man’s request.

Police later learned the man was tied to a criminal incident that happened overnight. After getting that information, Samuelson reportedly went back into the hospital’s emergency department to question him. That is when things suddenly turned violent.

According to Indiana State Police, a physical struggle broke out between the deputy and the suspect inside the ER. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired three shots at Samuelson. The gunfire sent panic through the emergency room as hospital workers and patients scrambled for safety.

Despite the chaos, officials said no other patients, visitors, or medical staff members were injured during the shooting. Hospital workers immediately rushed to help the wounded deputy before he was later airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for advanced treatment.

Samuelson has served with the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years and is also known for his work as a K-9 handler. Fellow officers described him as experienced, dependable, and deeply respected throughout the department. By Friday evening, he remained in critical condition as fellow deputies and community members prayed for his recovery.

Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr. of Chicago. Investigators said he fled the hospital area after the shooting but was later found and arrested in nearby woods. Police also recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the attack.

Investigators called the shooting an isolated incident and stressed there was no ongoing danger to the public or hospital community. Still, the violence inside a hospital emergency room left many shaken across Northwest Indiana, especially because it happened while a deputy was simply trying to help someone in need.
