Nolberto Meza was just trying to get across town on a typical Saturday evening. The 46-year-old resident from nearby Hyattsville, Maryland, was riding his moped through Northwest Washington, minding his own business, when a chaotic situation headed straight for him.
It all went down around 5:35 p.m. right on the William Howard Taft Bridge. Meza was cruising along a route used by thousands of city commuters every single day, completely unaware that a stolen car was tearing through the streets just blocks away.
Out of nowhere, a silver Honda Accord came flying down Connecticut Avenue. The driver of the stolen vehicle crossed the lines directly into oncoming traffic, hitting Meza’s moped head-on with incredible force.
The violent impact threw Meza hard onto the roadway, causing catastrophic injuries. D.C. Fire and EMS personnel rushed to the bridge within minutes, desperately trying everything they could to save his life, but he tragically died right there at the scene.
While Meza lay on the pavement, the driver who caused the crash didn’t even tap the brakes. The stolen car kept speeding away from the horrific scene, leaving a trail of deep heartbreak behind on the bridge.
Now, family and friends are left to pick up the pieces of a life cut short far too soon. Loved ones are mourning a sudden, senseless loss that never should have happened, remembering a regular guy who was just caught in the wrong place at the worst possible time.
The driver is locked up now, facing a serious second-degree murder charge for the tragedy. But for the people who knew and loved Nolberto Meza, the legal fallout does very little to heal the massive void left in their lives today.
