Joseph Pagano, Hamilton: Walks away unscathed from three-car crash only to be fatally struck moments later on the dark expressway.”

The sudden heartbreak hitting a small New Jersey community shows how fast a routine Saturday night drive can turn into a nightmare. Joseph J. Pagano Jr., a 34-year-old from Manahawkin, lost his life in a truly bizarre and tragic sequence of events on the Atlantic City Expressway.

It was around 10:15 p.m. on June 20, 2026. Joseph was cruising westbound in his Dodge pickup truck through Hamilton Township. Out of nowhere, he got tangled up in a three-vehicle fender bender near milepost 11.3.

State troopers confirmed that nobody got hurt in that first wreck. Joseph managed to pull his truck safely onto the right shoulder. He was okay, alive, and completely uninjured.

For reasons investigators are still trying to figure out, Joseph stepped out of his truck. He became a pedestrian on one of the busiest, fastest stretches of highway in South Jersey, attempting to cross the westbound lanes.

As he stepped into the fast lane, a Nissan SUV traveling westbound couldn’t stop in time. The SUV struck Joseph with immense force. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but his injuries were just too severe, and he passed away right there.

The horror didn’t stop with the first impact. Seconds later, a Kia slammed right into the back of the Nissan SUV, causing a messy secondary chain-reaction crash. Six people across both those vehicles ended up with minor injuries and had to be rushed to local hospitals.

Beyond the police reports and sirens, Joseph’s sudden death leaves a massive void. His family, friends, and loved ones in Manahawkin are left grieving a son and friend who was deeply cherished. The local community is wrapping its arms around a heartbroken family trying to process a loss that came completely out of the blue.
