A quiet Sunday morning in Abilene turned tragic when a rollover crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Michael Menjares and left four other people injured.
According to investigators, the crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday in the 6500 block of West Lake Road. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a major vehicle accident involving a Toyota RAV4 carrying five occupants.

Authorities said the SUV was traveling south on West Lake Road when it suddenly began drifting to the right side of the roadway. The vehicle then left the pavement, entered a grassy drainage ditch, and rolled over.
When first responders arrived, they found a devastating scene. Michael Menjares, a 17-year-old from Abilene, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has left family members, friends, and members of the community grieving the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
The four other occupants inside the SUV survived the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not publicly released details about the extent of their injuries.
Investigators have worked through the circumstances surrounding the crash and said there is currently no indication that alcohol or intoxication played a role. That finding has shifted attention toward other possible factors as authorities continue examining what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The loss has deeply affected those who knew Michael. As loved ones struggle with the sudden tragedy, community members have begun rallying around the family. A fundraising effort has reportedly been organized to help cover funeral and related expenses during this difficult time.
Police continue to investigate the crash and are expected to review all available evidence before determining exactly what led to the fatal rollover. For now, a grieving community is remembering a teenager whose life ended far too soon on a stretch of road that became the scene of heartbreak overnight.
