Braselton, Ga. Michael Steffman Found Dead Inside East Lake Drive Home Amid GBI Investigation

Authorities in Braselton, Georgia are investigating the death of former police chief Michael Steffman after he was found inside a residence on East Lake Drive on Friday. Law enforcement officials confirmed a heavy presence at the scene as the situation unfolded in the quiet neighborhood.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the case. Officials say they are working to determine exactly what led to Steffman’s death, but at this time no cause or manner of death has been released.

The home where the incident occurred is located in the 100 block of East Lake Drive. Sources familiar with the situation say Steffman had been living there as a tenant. The property is reportedly owned by two former Braselton city council members.

Neighbors described seeing emergency responders and a coroner at the scene, with the body later removed from the residence. Authorities later confirmed the deceased individual was Steffman.

Steffman’s death comes after a turbulent period in his professional and legal life. In November 2025, he was arrested shortly after announcing his retirement from the Braselton Police Department. His resignation was initially described as being for personal reasons.

At the time of his arrest, Jackson County Jail records showed he was facing multiple charges, including violation of oath by a public officer, stalking, harassing phone calls, and six counts related to unlawful use of law enforcement license plate data. The case had already drawn attention from state investigators.

He was released on a $13,000 bond following his booking. The investigation into those charges was still ongoing when news of his death emerged.

Steffman, originally from Connecticut, had served with the Braselton Police Department since 2005. Over nearly two decades, he worked in several roles before being appointed interim police chief in 2024 and officially sworn in as chief in April 2025.

Following his departure, city officials appointed Zack Tiller as interim police chief. Authorities have not said whether foul play is suspected in Steffman’s death, and the investigation remains active as officials await further findings.
