Las Cruces, N.M. — A motorcyclist has died after a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a car in Las Cruces on Wednesday afternoon. The incident brought a heavy emergency response and forced several road closures in the area.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on April 22, 2026. It took place near the intersection of Valley Drive and Rigsby Road. Traffic in the area came to a standstill as first responders rushed to the scene.
Police identified the motorcyclist as Isaac Helmstetler. He was seriously injured in the collision and found in critical condition at the scene.
Emergency crews moved quickly to stabilize him. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso for urgent treatment.
Doctors worked to save his life, but Helmstetler later died from his injuries. His death was confirmed after he arrived at the hospital.
The crash forced authorities to shut down parts of Valley Drive between Avenida de Mesilla and Boutz Road. Sections of Rigsby Road near the intersection were also closed while investigators worked.
Police have not released details about what caused the crash. The investigation is still active as officials continue to examine evidence from the scene.
