Patrick Wells, 66, Dies After Sudden Crash Along US 52 in Wheelersburg, Ohio
Patrick Wells, a 66-year-old man from Maineville, lost his life Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash along U.S. Route 52 West in Scioto County. The crash happened just before 1:00 p.m. near the State Route 522 exit in Wheelersburg, Ohio. What began as a routine drive ended in a sudden, fatal turn that is still under investigation.
According to preliminary information from authorities, Wells was traveling westbound when his vehicle drifted off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck a guardrail. Officials have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the road.

Emergency crews arrived quickly at the scene. Wells was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center for urgent treatment. Medical teams made efforts to save his life upon arrival.
Despite those efforts, Wells later died from his injuries. His death has left a quiet mark on the community as investigators continue working to understand what happened in those final moments on the highway.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. That detail has narrowed the focus of the investigation to factors involving the vehicle’s movement and roadway conditions.
At this stage, officials have not pointed to a clear cause. Weather, speed, mechanical issues, or medical emergency have not been confirmed or ruled out. Investigators are reviewing all possibilities.
The stretch of U.S. 52 where the crash occurred remained active for a time as crews documented evidence and cleared the scene. Traffic was later restored, but the investigation has continued beyond the initial response.
Authorities say the case remains open. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is expected to release additional findings as more information becomes available.
