A spring break trip meant for family time turned into a heartbreaking scene on Interstate 5 in southern Oregon. Eighteen-year-old Davin Jack Smith, a high school senior from El Sobrante, lost his life Monday afternoon after the SUV he was driving slammed into a stalled semi-truck near Canyonville in Douglas County.
The crash happened around 3 p.m., according to state authorities. Smith was behind the wheel of a Honda CR-V, heading north with his family, when the vehicle collided with the truck in the outside lane. The force of the impact was severe. Both the SUV and the cargo inside the trailer caught fire almost immediately, leaving little chance for escape.

Davin was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, 60-year-old Lawrence Wayne Smith Jr., and his twin sister, Annika Jace Smith, were both seriously hurt. Emergency crews rushed them from the wreckage and airlifted them to nearby hospitals. A family friend, 19-year-old Ivan Amadeo Gonzalez of Hercules, was also in the vehicle. He survived with minor injuries and was taken by ambulance for treatment.
Investigators said the semi-truck, a white Freightliner, had been struggling on the road before the crash. It reportedly stalled multiple times while climbing an uphill stretch of the interstate. At some point, it remained in the outside lane, directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
The truck driver, 61-year-old Brenden Larry Christensen of San Diego, is now facing serious charges. Authorities believe impairment played a role in the crash. He was arrested and accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants, along with manslaughter tied to the fatal collision.
For the Smith family, the loss cuts deep. Friends say the trip was meant to be a simple visit to relatives in Oregon, a break from school and work. Instead, it became a life-altering tragedy. Davin, described as a bright and promising student, had been preparing to graduate alongside his twin sister this year.
Back home, the community is stepping in to help. A fundraiser organized by friends aims to support the family with funeral costs, medical bills, and lost income as they begin a long road to recovery. Lawrence Smith, a longtime teacher in the West Contra Costa Unified School District, now faces both physical healing and the weight of an unimaginable loss. As of the weekend, donations had already climbed past $40,000 toward a $55,000 goal, a sign of just how many lives Davin touched in his short time.
