Marquavious Da’shawn Westbrook, 19, is being mourned as a gentle giant after a Saturday night shooting at a block party in Ocilla left him dead and another young man critically wounded. Family members described Westbrook as always smiling, respectful and full of promise—traits that made his sudden death feel particularly cruel to those who loved him.
Westbrook was taken to a hospital after the shooting and pronounced dead, his mother and stepfather confirmed. His aunt said he was an “innocent bystander” just out to have a good time when violence exploded, and she begged the community to stop the senseless shootings that keep taking young lives.

Damonee Crumedy, 20, was also shot and remains in intensive care at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center, his mother said. Loved ones are holding vigil and praying for his recovery while coping with the shock of the night’s events.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting Ocilla police after a request on April 4. Officers reported locating multiple victims near East 10th Street and North McKinley Street and transporting them to area hospitals. No suspect information has been released.
Friends gathered in small groups to share stories of Westbrook’s kindness and bright smile, and family members said they will lean on their faith and on community support to get through the days ahead. A fundraiser to help the families was expected to be set up.
As investigators continue to piece together what happened, neighbors say the town feels raw and vulnerable. The GBI and local police urged anyone with information to come forward while promising to provide updates as the inquiry continues.
