The quiet of a Saturday morning in Zephyrhills, Florida, was shattered by a violent crash that left two families grieving and several others recovering from injuries. Just after 4:30 a.m., along Eiland Boulevard south of Handcart Road, two vehicles collided head-on in a moment that changed lives in an instant.
Authorities say a Nissan Altima, driven by a 30-year-old man from Dade City, was heading northbound with two young passengers inside. Among them were 20-year-old Kaya Newsome and 4-year-old Kyzer Newsome, a child whose life would be cut tragically short in the crash.
At the same time, a Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling southbound, driven by a 43-year-old Zephyrhills man. Inside his vehicle were three passengers: a 40-year-old woman, along with a 74-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, all local residents.
For reasons investigators are still working to understand, the Nissan suddenly crossed into the southbound lane. What followed was a near head-on collision that left both vehicles badly damaged and scattered debris across the roadway.
The impact was devastating. Four-year-old Kyzer Newsome died at the scene, leaving behind a grieving family and a future that will never unfold. Also killed was the 40-year-old woman riding in the Hyundai, whose identity has not been widely shared as loved ones process the loss.
Six other people involved in the crash were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Officials say their injuries, while serious enough to require medical attention, are not believed to be life-threatening.
