The quiet stretch of highway in Calcasieu Parish turned tragic just before sunrise Thursday, when 32-year-old Erick John of Lake Charles lost his life in a violent three-vehicle crash. What began as an ordinary morning drive ended in heartbreak along Louisiana Highway 27, near the intersection with Highway 397 in the Bell City area.
State troopers say the crash happened shortly before 6:00 a.m. on April 9, 2026. The early hour meant light traffic, but that did little to soften the impact of what unfolded. According to investigators, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado traveling south suddenly crossed the center line for reasons still under review.

That truck, driven by 32-year-old Alfonso Arredondo of Port Neches, Texas, sideswiped two vehicles heading north. One was a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe carrying multiple occupants. The other was a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by Erick John. The collision was abrupt and unforgiving.
After striking both vehicles, the Silverado veered off the roadway. It entered a ditch and overturned, leaving behind a chaotic scene of twisted metal and scattered debris. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the damage had already been done.
Authorities confirmed that Erick John, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time, suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. For those who knew him, it marked the sudden and devastating loss of a young man whose day had just begun.
The occupants of the Hyundai, including the driver and four passengers, were also properly restrained. They were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as minor to moderate. While they survived, the emotional toll of the crash is expected to linger.
Troopers at the scene noted signs suggesting impairment from the driver of the Silverado. Arredondo was taken into custody and later booked on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and several counts of vehicular negligent injury. Toxicology samples were collected as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials continue to stress a message that has been repeated too often in cases like this. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes. They are urging drivers to stay sober, stay alert, and make responsible choices behind the wheel—because one moment can change everything.
