Homewood, Alabama’s close-knit community is reeling from the sudden death of 24-year-old Precious Elicia J’anae Johnson of Birmingham. Johnson was shot and killed Sunday night inside the Women’s Medical Center at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in what police describe as an apparent murder-suicide.
Police say officers responded just after 9:25 p.m. to reports of shots fired inside the hospital. When they arrived, they found Johnson and 19-year-old Kynath William Terry, Jr., of Midfield, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Jefferson County authorities later confirmed Johnson had been shot multiple times.

Investigators are treating the scene as a domestic assault that ended with Terry’s apparent suicide after killing Johnson. No one else was wounded during the incident, and police have said there’s no ongoing danger to the public.
Friends, family, and community members have been left in shock. Those who knew Johnson describe her as a warm presence with a bright spirit, someone who brought joy to others even in small everyday moments.
Hospital officials said the facility has fully cooperated with law enforcement and resumed normal operations after the traumatic night. Staff and patients were shaken but grateful that no additional injuries occurred.
In the wake of the tragedy, loved ones have been gathering to share memories and support one another. Vigils and remembrances spoke to Johnson’s kindness, her laughter, and the meaningful connections she made in her twenty-four years.
As the investigation continues, the Homewood community is holding Johnson’s family in their thoughts. Her loss has been described as immeasurable, a life cut far too short and a reminder of how fragile things can be.
