Terence Cobbs, known by many in Atlanta’s West End as “Yohan,” is now being remembered after a fatal sequence of events that began at a familiar street corner and ended days later in hospital care.
For years, he was a constant presence at the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard SW. People driving through that part of the city would often see him sitting quietly on the same bench, day after day.
Some residents knew his real name, but most simply recognized his face. To the neighborhood, he had become part of the environment, as familiar as the traffic lights and storefronts around him.
Police responded to a pedestrian crash on May 12 around 7:30 p.m. after reports that a man had been struck near that same intersection where he usually sat. Officers arrived to find him critically injured and he was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Medical officials later confirmed that Cobbs died on May 14 at 12:43 a.m. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an examination, though the official cause and manner of death remain under review.
Family members said Cobbs had lived in Atlanta for years and often chose to stay outdoors despite efforts to bring him into more stable housing. They described him as someone who had formed a routine and connection to the West End community around him.
They also said he spent nearly every day for about eight years at that same bench, turning it into a fixed point in his life. It became, in their words, part of who he was and how people identified him.
As news of his death spread, neighbors and passersby reflected on how often they had seen him without truly knowing his story. Some expressed sadness that a familiar presence in the area was suddenly gone.
A public viewing for Cobbs was held at Willie A. Watkins Historic West End Chapel, while a celebration of life service is scheduled for May 23 at St. Mark AME Church in Sparta, Georgia.
