I‑20 in Douglas County: Police Kill Armed Carrollton Man After Domestic Pursuit

Interstate 20 eastbound in Douglas County became the backdrop for a fatal police shooting Friday afternoon when officers shot and killed a Carrollton man who brandished a firearm at them following a domestic dispute. Authorities have identified the man as 52‑year‑old Jorge Narvaez. Earlier in the day, Narvaez had been involved in an argument with his wife and another person. As they left in a separate vehicle, Narvaez followed, prompting multiple 911 calls from witnesses who feared a possible road‑rage incident.

Around 2:25 p.m., officers with the Villa Rica Police Department found both vehicles stopped just beyond the Post Road exit. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Narvaez exited his car holding a gun and began walking toward his wife’s vehicle and a responding officer. Two officers then opened fire, striking Narvaez multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Motorists caught in the aftermath described long delays as officials shut down all eastbound lanes of the interstate for several hours. Traffic backed up for miles as emergency crews and investigators worked. Witnesses told reporters they saw the cars weaving through traffic and bumping into each other before officers intervened. One witness said the man holding the weapon fell to the ground shortly after the shots were fired.

Narvaez’s body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s medical examiner’s office in Decatur for an autopsy. The GBI is handling the independent investigation into the shooting at the request of Villa Rica police, as is customary for all officer‑involved shootings in Georgia. After the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Douglas County district attorney’s office for review.

Local law enforcement officials have not released details about the officers involved, citing the ongoing investigation. Residents in the Carrollton area expressed shock at the incident, with some noting that disputes between family members sometimes end up in public and dangerous ways. The deadly encounter has raised questions about how quickly domestic situations can escalate into life‑threatening confrontations.

The highway closure forced drivers to seek alternate routes for several hours. Traffic did not return to normal until well into Friday evening once all evidence had been collected and the scene cleared. Fortunately, there were no injuries to other drivers or innocent bystanders during the incident.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the chase and shooting to contact the GBI. As the investigation continues, family members of Narvaez have not issued a public statement, and it remains unclear what will happen next in the legal review process.
